Short Answer:

What do you envision is the role of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in regulating business and protecting the environment?
The EPA was created to enforce laws designed to protect the environment and human health. The EPA should ensure that we have clean air, water, and land. We know most American environmental protection is done by state and local governments. EPA sets policy, subsidizes state and local programs, oversees states, and conducts scientific research. The EPA is shrinking at a rapid pace when we actually need to increase it’s capacity to govern the national environment. I envision expansion and sustainability to ensure the EPA can enforce laws to protect us. We must work toward efficiency, equity and cost-effective ways to administer environmental protections. We must have a competent, well resourced federal presence, working alongside active, competent and empowered state and local partners. We know that the economy has continued to grow. As we utilize technology to push for cleaner air and water we know the benefits far out way cost. We need to do more, and can without harming the economy.

How would you describe the status of civil rights in the US today?
Today in the US our civil rights are in peril. Over the course of history we have made steady progress in the pursuit of obtaining civil rights, but even with this progress systemic racism and injustice still persist. In this country presently we have elected officials promoting policies of punishment, fear, and division and creating a culture that continues to target communities of color for political advantage. In order for our nation to truly move toward freedom, we must obtain equal protection under the law. The struggle for civil rights and equal opportunity are one in the same and have always been a reflection of one another. Through out the history of this nation, which was built on the premise of exclusion, we continue to deny people access to education, employment, and economic opportunities. We need to focus on expanding access to safe schools, fair working environments, and inclusive communities not reverse civil rights protections and progress made thus far.

What will you do to expand access to affordable, accessible housing for low-income people in the United States?
My platform for housing includes affordable housing programs that bring the cost of housing relative to household income, equitable policies, and programs that promote homeownership. I support increased funding incentives for developers to increase affordable rental housing in rural communities. I will increase federal protections against racism and discrimination for tenants. I support establishing a “land bank” to develop abandoned or foreclosed properties, and grant ownership to eligible participants. I will sponsor legislation that ensures formerly incarcerated people are able to successfully transition into safe, affordable housing in a supportive environment. We must expand beyond emergency and transitional housing and focus on policy changes that address increased rent costs while wages are stagnant. The Federal definition of homelessness is a huge barrier to resources and unjustly targets formerly incarcerated and marginalized people and must be addressed.
