Short Answer:
What do you envision is the role of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in regulating business and protecting the environment?
The EPA’s role is to protect the environment, and by default, human health, through developing and enforcing regulations that minimize the contamination of our air, water, and soil. Conversely, businesses have a moral, ethical, and societal obligation to self-monitor and limit the environmental impact from their activities.
It’s our responsibility to preserve the purity of our soil, water, oceans, and air for our health today and the survival of the planet tomorrow. I support sound protections governed by the EPA, but there must be oversights to control abuses and overreach.
How would you describe the status of civil rights in the US today?
America has made great strides in civil rights in the past 50 years. We also must continue its progress to minimize the violation of individuals’ freedoms. Today’s civil rights protection is much different from that of 50 years ago. Discrimination, injustice, and inequality have evolved to take on new communities, and freedoms that were once not questioned – like the suppression and censorship of speech.
All people are created equal and deserve equal protection regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, ideology, or sexuality. However, the constant attention and accusations of civil rights violations can engender negative repercussions. As with everything in life, we must seek a balance in what gets labeled a civil right abuse.
What will you do to expand access to affordable, accessible housing for low-income people in the United States?
Affordable housing is a multi-prong problem. There needs to be more government support for affordable housing, while at the same time invest in programs that offer opportunity, training, and education to reduce the number of people needing housing assistance. Economic issues such as inflation, which reduces disposable income, and higher interest rates, that impact home prices, need to be better controlled, along with the misappropriation of funds earmarked for the National Housing Trust.
